2 WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is the response of your body and mind to being challenged or threatened. Does stress always have a negative affect on the body? Is stress normal?

3 NEGATIVE/POSITIVE STRESS
Positive stress can be referred to as eustress Negative stress can be referred to as distress

4 WHAT ARE THE EVENTS OR SITUATIONS THAT CAUSE YOU STRESS
WHAT ARE THE EVENTS OR SITUATIONS THAT CAUSE YOU STRESS? TYPES OF STRESS: Catastrophes: natural disasters, major life changes Everyday problems: conflict, competition, pressure Environmental problems: conditions in your immediate surroundings SwitchTasking: Focus on One Thing at a Time!

5 BODIES RESPONSES TO STRESS HAPPEN IN 3 STAGES
Alarm Stage: High Alert -“Fight or flight” -Limbic system= instinct Resistance Stage: Your body adapts to the continued presence of the stressor, uses up a lot of energy Exhaustion Stage: your body can no longer keep up with demands placed on it Alarm: Body releases adrenaline and “fight or flight” Resistance: may not have same symptoms but still using a lot of energy Exhaustion: Physical and emotional resources are depleted. This stage doesn’t always happen

Psychosomatic Response: the body’s reaction to thoughts or mental stress Definition of Psychosomatic: 1. of, relating to, concerned with, or involving both mind and body 2. of, relating to, involving, or concerned with bodily symptoms caused by mental or emotional disturbance

12 COPING WITH STRESS Physical Activity Relaxation
Stretch break, deep breathing Biofeedback: people learn to control one or more body functions by monitoring their body’s responses REFLECTIVE THOUGHT OR AWARENESS

13 IF I REDUCE MY STRESS I.. Can lower my chances of: Stomach aches
Asthma Headaches Diseases (immune system) Heart Disease (B.V. narrow, B.P rises) (Can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of having a stroke)

14 MANAGING STRESS Time management (make lists)
Awareness/think realistic (are you assuming worst case scenario?) Re-channel (refocus)

3 minute presentation to class about the topic then lead your relaxation technique to the class – have them follow Student Stress Presentation Example
