3 WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is the effect of physical and psychological demands on the body. STRESSOR – Anything that causes stress on the body.

4 Chronic vs Acute Stress
ACUTE = SHORT TERM Sudden problems that needs to be solved. If not it could lead to chronic stress. CHRONIC = LONG TERM Unrelieved stress which leads to exhaustion. This type can be most damaging to health.

5 Chronic stress can cause…
PSYCHOSOMATIC ILLNESSES: Related to or made worse by stress. Examples include migraines, rashes, ulcers, cold sores. WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM Frequent illnesses and longer recovery HEART DISEASE Increased cholesterol and increased risk of heart attack

6 Not All Stress Is Bad EUSTRESS is positive. Examples include Competition, planning a party, a date, having a baby, packing for vacation… DISTRESS is negative. Examples include loss or suffering, an injury, a long term illness… In general, stress can help and prepare you for future challenges.

9 This creates an unbalanced state.
Adrenaline 5. Blood flow to skin is reduced but blood to the brain and muscles increase 6. Digestion slows down 7. Immune system temporarily slows down This creates an unbalanced state.

Pounding heart Shaking Grinding teeth Sweating Stiff muscles Headache Gastrointestinal changes Weakened immune system

12 Stages of Stress Response General Adaptation Syndrome (G.A.S)
1. Alarm = Fight or Flight (physical signs of stress) 2. Resistance = Body attempts to regain internal balance. 3. A. Recovery = Internal balance restored OR B. Exhaustion = Unmanaged stress. The body stays in a state of emergency causing exhaustion. Results in a tired feeling that lowers one’s level of activity and immune system.

It is not the amount or type of stress that matters. It is how we deal with the stress that matters most.
