HOW you deal with stress / anxiety depends on your past experiences with the problem. POSITIVE stress / anxiety – EUSTRESS NEGATIVE stress / anxiety – DISTRESS STRESSOR – anything that causes stress / anxiety

6 STRESS & ANXIETY When you perceive a situation or event to be stressful or a threat, your body begins a STRESS / ANXIETY RESPONSE. NERVOUS SYSTEM ENDOCRINE SYSTEM BODY’S RESPONSE ALARM – 1st stage body recognizes stress / anxiety RESISTANCE – 2nd stage “fight” or “flight” FATIGUE (EXHAUSTION) – 3rd stage occurs if stress / anxiety last too long become ill during this stage

TYPE A PERSONALITY very productive difficulty relaxing strives for perfection driven by the clock TYPE B PERSONALITY very relaxed – somewhat carefree satisfied with lower output cooperative uncompetitive

9 STRESS & ANXIETY STRESS MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES redirect your energy
relax and laugh keep a positive outlook seek out support plan ahead get adequate sleep get regular physical activity eat nutritious foods avoid tobacco, alcohol and other drugs

10 ANGER & VIOLENCE VIOLENCE – the use of force to injure or abuse another person or damage property HOMICIDE –killing of another person SUICIDE – intentional self harm MOST acts of violence can be avoided IF the people involved can control their behaviors CAUSES OF VIOLENCE Anger Fear Peer pressure Substance Abuse Availability of Weapons
