LT: Today I can apply scientific concepts to understand environmental issues by analyzing the author’s purpose in diagrams. What are natural resources and what is the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources?

Natural Resource- Materials removed from the Earth and used by people to satisfy needs and wants.

All resources are put into one of two categories: Non-Renewable Renewable Nonrenewable Resource- a resource that cannot be remade or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption (use). ie. It’s used faster than it can be remade. Renewable Resource- a resource that can be replenished in a short period of time.

How do pesticides and fertilizers from farms and lawns, and oil and gas from parking lots and streets get into the water sources? Runoff- most land is above sea level. Water runs from the land to the water sources

Part 3- Ecosystem Disruption Explain what it is How does it affect the organisms in an ecosystem? Habitat Destruction Organisms that live in the forest (and other areas) lose their homes due to the clearing of forests and woodland to make homes and buildings. It increases competition for food and space which results in reduced populations. Eventually leading to extinctions. Loss of Biodiversity Biodiversity is the various organisms within an ecosystem. Loss of biodiversity is the death of organisms and/or species. The loss of life in an ecosystem disrupts the balance of all lives within that ecosystem. Organisms rely on other organisms for food and population control. Invasive Species An organism that is introduced into an ecosystem that it is not a native to. This can disrupt the ecosystem because the non-native species will not have natural predators and its population can increase to the point that it creates an increase of competition for space and food. This competition can lead to the disruption and/or the extinction of other species.

What are some of the ways to reduce human impact on the environment What are some of the ways to reduce human impact on the environment? Conservation (protecting) and Restoration (cleaning up and restoring damaged habitats) Reduce -reduce the amount of energy used and waste produced Reuse – reuse goods Recycle- reusing natural resources by breaking them down and using them to create other goods

Technology- provides cleaner energy sources, better ways to deal with waste, and improved methods. Renewable resources- the burning of fossil fuels results in the release of the chemicals that lead to various types of pollution (ex) acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, etc. Environmental Awareness- Advocacy- people who fight for a solution. Education- education leads to public support and advocacy. Planning for the Future- Planning for future generations can help avoid damage to the environment and help us solve environmental issues.
