Presentation on theme: "Explain the greenhouse effect"— Presentation transcript:

1 Explain the greenhouse effect
Gases in our atmosphere (like Caron Dioxide and Water vapor) absorb heat. That heat bounces between the ground and the clouds to keep our earth warm enough for life!

2 What does the greenhouse effect cause?
The greenhouse effect allows the earth to be warm enough for life! But when we add too much Carbon Dioxide, the greenhouse effect could also cause global warming.

3 What could you compare the greenhouse effect to?
Car with windows up or a Greenhouse

4 What causes the greenhouse effect
Accumulation of gases like Carbon Dioxide & Water Vapor

5 Give two examples of a nonrenewable resource.
Fossil Fuels – Petroleum, Natural Gas, Coal Minerals

6 Name three advantages to using alternative energy.
We don’t have to rely on fossil fuels – so we can slow down global warming The resources are renewable

7 Name two effects of using fewer natural resources and reducing wastes?
Reducing pollution Preventing habitat destruction

8 Give two examples of a renewable resource.
Wind turbines Solar panels Hydro electric Biofuels Some trees that grow back very quickly – like bamboo

9 Which chemicals destroy the ozone layer?
CFCs

10 Which chemical is poisonous and can cause cancer?
PCBs

11 Which pesticide caused eagle eggs to become weak?
DDT

12 Name the three fossil fuels.
Coal Petroleum Natural Gas

13 Which fossil fuels are formed from decayed sea organisms?
Petroleum and Natural Gas

14 Deforestation is another name for , like when a tropical rain forest is cleared.
Habitat Destruction

15 Human population growth is due to …
Medicine and Farming Before medicine, one out of two babies died before the age of one. Now almost all babies live – so we have more people Before farming life was very hard – we had to find all of our food. Now that we make our own food, we can feed large numbers of people

16 How does pollution affect human health?
In the short term And In the long term

17 What two things help maintain biodiversity?
Protect endangered species And Protect habitat

18 Give an example of something you can do for each of the 3 Rs – recycling, reducing, reusing.
Recycling – making paper from used cardboard Reducing – using less paper by writing on the front & back Reusing – using the same bottle over and over again

19 Point or Non-Point Pollution? An oil spill after a truck crash
Point – comes from one place

20 Point or Non-Point Pollution? Loud noise from planes overhead
Non-point - many places

21 Name one thing that habitat destruction causes.
Loss of biodiversity Water pollution Soil erosion

22 What type of waste is dangerous for thousands of years
What type of waste is dangerous for thousands of years? Where does it come from? Radioactive waste from nuclear energy

23 Name three types of alternative energy sources.
Hydroelectric, chemical, solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, biofuels

24 Name 1 pro for using fossil fuels.
Its already being used It is less expensive for now

25 Name 1 con for using fossil fuels.
Nonrenewable Causes pollution Acid rain Oil spills Habitat destruction smog

26 Name 1 pro for using alternative energy sources.
They are renewable resources They cause less pollution

27 Name 1 con for using alternative energy sources.
They are expensive right now They are currently hard to get They may create nuclear waste

28 Wastes that can catch fire, wear through metal, explode, or make people sick are called?
Hazardous Waste

29 An exotic species – it is not native to the area that it is living in.
The African honeybee has come into South America from Africa. It is outcompeting the native bees in South America. The African honeybee is an example of An exotic species – it is not native to the area that it is living in.

30 Name the five types of pollution
Gases Noise Garbage High Powered Energy chemicals

31 What causes the greenhouse effect?
The gasses in the atmosphere like Oxygen and Water vapor that absorb energy and store it as heat.
