PSYCHOLOGICAL /EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS Emotional Impact of Chronic Disease or Physical Disability Emotional impact of a chronic illness or physical disability revolves around: not felling well, decreased activity, and changes to finance, self image, and relations Chronic illness or disability often produces feeling of helplessness, frustration, hopelessness, or great sadness. The emotional wellness of an illness and or aging person has a major or a marked impact on the physical symptoms under stress. Regardless of the illness, there is a powerful emotional component which contributes to a need for physical and emotional support and care.

Embarrassment and shame at conditions such as incontinence, dependence, illness seen as weakness. Physical Impacts: Energy levels slows, less active, may gain weight Body systems deteriorating Sensory losses(hearing and vision) decreases safe movements and communications

PSYCHOLOGICAL /EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS Physical Impacts: 4. External changes: skin wrinkles, and becomes fragile ,grey hair. 5. Changes in bone mass and strength, falls often in serious injury. 6. Sensitivity to scenes, light changes, and medication caused by changing body systems. Anxiety: - Includes Panic disorder, Post traumatic stress disorder, Specific Phobias, Obsessive – compulsive disorder, Social phobia or social anxiety disorder, Generalized anxiety disorder.

PSYCHOLOGICAL /EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS Depression: - Major depression is the leading cause of depression world wide. This involves the ageing mind getting persistent sadness, anxious, or in empty mood. - Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, worthlessness, pessimism (losing hope) - Behavioral Symptoms: statements about death and suicide threats Increased alcohol or prescription of drugs use Failure to take of self or follow medical orders Sudden interest on firearms Social withdrawal Rush to complete or reverse a will

PSYCHOLOGICAL /EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS Addiction and older adults Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease. An individual who has an addiction to a substance has become dependent upon the substance. When usage ceases then people will get withdrawal and this can provoke serious effects. Withdrawals symptoms include severe headaches, diarrhea, sweating, physical pain, vomiting, and tremors. - Alcohol is the largest problem with substance abuse - Taking medications plus alcohol causes additional problem -Prescription and over the counter drugs leads to misuse and over dosage.

PSYCHOLOGICAL /EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS Psychological Care - Providing care to Aged patients and their families can be extremely rewarding, also it can be stressful and emotionally draining. - The chronic exposure to related stresses and human suffering can lead to adverse physical, emotional, social, and psychological effects. - This is commonly referred to as burned out or compassion fatigue
