PROMOTING OSH MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO ENSURE DECENT WORK Time Frame : 12 months Promila Poddar Education Secretary – Women Committee Jatiyo Sramik League (JSL)

BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION It is a well known fact that occupational accidents and diseases cause great human suffering and loss. The economic cost is very high. Yet public awareness, including employer and worker awareness of occupational safety & health tends is very low. All too frequently it does not get the priority it merits. OSH represents a complex of measures to be taken to prevent the loss of lives and health of workers due to occupational accidents and diseases. The very wide spectrum of measures includes among others development of international and national standards, regulations and norms, formulation of technical guidance, the provision of technical advisory services, including technical cooperation activities, and the dissemination of information through publications and the Internet. Special OSH training at different levels of competence aims to prevent occupational accidents and diseases. The main purpose of these measures is to promote an OSH management system, improve working conditions, to raise living standards of workers through the increase of productivity and to extend decent work principles as wide as possible.

BACKGROUND & JUSTIFICATION The following three principles constitute the basis for the ILO standards on OSH.   Work should take place in a safe and healthy working environment Conditions of work should be consistent with workers` well-being and human dignity. Work should offer real possibilities for personal achievement, self-fulfillment and service to society. To develop a better and healthy working environment JSL is trying to improve the monitoring system in the factory level by introducing OSH management committee and OSH management system together with the help of workers, employers and mid level management. Under this project we will target 15/20 factories where we are going to train the trade union leaders and mid level management on occupational health & safety and OSH management system, so that they can establish a system in their own factory.
