WELCOME! Thanks for taking the time to come and learn more about what your child is doing in 5th grade. If you like, write a note to your student. He/she will enjoy reading it tomorrow. PTA – September 21, 4:00 p.m.

Communication Email: mayfield.michelle@westada.org CONTACT INFORMATION: Email: mayfield.michelle@westada.org Prospect Phone: 350-4000 Check out my website on the school website Check out my website: http://www.westada.org/Domain/2678 Weekly Report: Please review the returned work that comes home every Wednesday in your child’s binder and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Please watch for my weekly emails to let you know if your child is staying caught up. Finished work is to stay in the binder until the end of the trimester. Agenda: Please check your child’s agenda daily to find out what we worked on that day as well as any homework and any upcoming tests or projects. The students are supposed to highlight the part they need to work on that night.

Rules and Consequences - Make good decisions - Solve problems - Show respect Consequences - Solve your own problem when/if you can - White book - If you cannot solve it, a choice will be make for you. - If you feel something is unfair, please talk to me.

Performance based scores – for all subjects The following are descriptions for the Performance Scores: Advanced (Above grade level work) The student demonstrates consistent competency on achievement targets above their grade level. Proficient (70% - 100%) The student demonstrate consistent competency on grade level achievement targets. Strategic (50 – 69%) The student demonstrates inconsistent competency on grade level achievement targets Basic (1 – 49%) The student does not yet demonstrate competency on grade level achievement targets.

Homework Please have your child read for 20 minutes, and practice math and word study (vocabulary and spelling) for 10 minutes each. When students have not finished classwork, it will be sent home to be completed. History and Science will require 15 min/day of studying for at least 1 week before the test. Students should not need to spend more than 50 min/day doing homework.

Curriculum Reading: We use a variety of materials in reading including the reading text and novels. Grades will be taken in comprehension, vocabulary skills, and various reading skills. Math: We use Engage New York materials to help prepare your student for middle school math. In fifth grade, we spend a lot of time with decimals and fractions. Students must know their math facts to be successful in 5th grade. Science: Our units will be on Earth’s systems, Living Systems, and the Structure and Function of Matter. Social Studies: We will be learning about the 13 American Colonies, the American Revolution, Establishing a Nation, and the Civil War. Language: The focus of fifth grade language arts is primarily grammar, spelling, and the writing process. We will write personal narratives, informational writing, research reports, poems, persuasive essays, and summaries. The student may choose to use printing or cursive, but it must be legible.

5th Grade Projects/Reports 40 Book Challenge – To complete this challenge by the end of the year, students need to read about 1 book each week. I encourage students to choose a different genre each month. I also encourage nonfiction books on our history and science topics. Who am I Newspaper - All the writing will be done in class, cartoons, and assembly of the newspaper may need to be completed at home. (Due in late September.) Revolution Game Board – In October your child will create game board about the revolution. This will contain the information needed for the test. We the People project – This year it will be presented to parents only, no judges. State Report – In April your child will create state report including a PowerPoint presentation. Science Fair Project – In May your child will conduct an experiment on their own and write it up in the proper format to present to the school.

How you can help at home Review agenda daily to help ensure nightly homework is completed. Have your child study for tests by quizzing them and helping them study. Most tests are available on my website. Encourage you child to spend as much time as possible reading. Please encourage your child to find a book that he/she hasn’t read and that’s at his/her reading level. Review weekly returned work and go over any items that your child may need additional help on.
