3 English Language Arts

4 ELA Writing: We will be working on 3 different long compositions, one for each trimester (narrative, expository, and persuasive). We will also cover standard English conventions and grammar. Daily prompts as morning work Weekly practice on IXL Spelling/Vocabulary: We will have biweekly lessons from the Wordly Wise series.

5 Reading We are starting a new, standards-based curriculum.
Not following a series Standards split into Modules (Units) All 5th grade working on same skills Goal: Consistency Materials: Novels, stories from Reading Street Anthology, articles, videos, informational texts, etc.

6 Reading Independent Practice: Please encourage your child to read independently at home. It is the best thing we can do to help them improve their skills: PRACTICE! Students should also keep reading logs for end-of-the-year prizes. Top 3 readers win BIG!!

7 Social Studies

8 Social Studies New Common Core Standards in June, 2018
Building on their knowledge of North American geography and peoples, students learn about the history of the colonies, the early Republic, the expansion of the United States, the growing sectional conflicts of the 19th century, and the Civil Rights Movement of the mid-20th century. They study these topics by exploring guiding questions such as, “What is the meaning of the statement, ‘All men are created equal’?” and “Is a person ever justified in disobeying a law?”

9 Curriculum United States History to the Civil War and the Modern Civil Rights Movement Early colonization and growth of colonies Reasons for revolution, The Revolutionary War, and the formation of government Principles of the United States Government Growth of the Republic Slavery, the legacy of the Civil War and the struggle for civil rights for all

10 Sources Students will gather information from various sources, including text books, articles, videos, and primary sources. Projects are cross-curricular and align with the guiding question of each module/unit. Assignments and rubrics will go home in advance. Students will learn how to cite sources and compose a bibliography.

11 Math Topics: multiplication, division, place value, decimals, fractions, mixed numbers, problem solving, coordinate grids, volume (to name a few!) Homework: Will be given Monday-Thursday and will be no longer than a few problems. It is to be done in pencil and passed in the next day. Always practice multiplication facts at home!

12 Science Topics: ecosystems, solar system, energy transfer, water cycle, matter (to name a few!) Homework: Will be given on Mondays and must be passed in by Thursdays. Topic-based projects will be assigned for each unit, some work may need to be done at home.

13 Grading Policy All Subjects: Tests/Projects 30%
Quizzes, Writing, Labs 30% Homework % Classwork % Assignments are due on time!

14 Classroom Rules BE POLITE!! BE PREPARED!! FOLLOW PROCEDURES!!

15 Gotcha Gaels When the students follow “The Three P’s” they will earn Gotcha Gael Tickets. There will be raffles that students can enter to win prizes with the tickets. Participation in school-wide events will cost tickets as well, so it is important to keep them safe!!

16 Field Trips: River Classroom Canoe trip in Septemeber/October. They come to us a few time throughout the year! Old Sturbridge Village in June Walking tour and Strand Theater in June Cost of trips depends on what we earn as a grade level from the magazine drive.
