Using “to be” Cornel Notes ASL does not use deixis for the abstract form of the verb “to be”. You use the abstract form in English sentences like “They will be late” or “She wants to be a physicist.” Signing the abstract for in ASL depends on the topic being signed and whether the concept involves a transition or change. Think about what you really mean by “be” or “to be” and select a sign that matches the concept, as in “I want to be a doctor” or “I will be 18 next month.”

Cornel Notes ASL students often find using classifiers difficult because they’re uncertain where to begin or how to describe the object. As you develop “Deaf” eyes and become used to this visual emphasis, using classifiers will become easier. For starters, don’t fingerspell what you want to show! Use your hands and signs you know to draw a visual picture. Don’t worry about finding the “right” classifier but follow your instincts. Remember to work from general to specific details.
