The tales as old as time… Disney Inspiration The tales as old as time…

THE MOVIES Gained Inspiration from Original Stories Stories were written or told verbally for entertainment Based on folklore Folklore: stories, traditions, jokes etc from a specific group of people United States example: Thanksgiving celebrates the pilgrims-specific to something that happened in the US and we recognize it as important Some of the most famous fairytale writers…

The Brothers Grimm Jacob Grimm (1785–1863) Wihelm Grimm (1786–1859) German folktales Not all stories intended for children Warning provided for readers (scary plots aimed to teach children) Famous for: Cinderella Snow White Rapunzel Little Red Riding Hood Hansel and Gretel

Hans Christian Anderson 1805-1875 Wrote stories, plays, poems, novels First volumes of fairytales were not successful 1845 four different translations of his fairy tales published (started gaining interest) Most famous for: Thumbelina The Ugly Duckling The Little Mermaid The Princess and the Pea

Examples of Disney Changes

Cinderella Common idea: The prince will marry whoever’s foot fits in the glass slipper.

Cinderella Disney Brothers Grimm Stepsisters try to force slipper on before it flies off Stepmother forces stepsisters to cut off… Toe Heel She tells them it won’t matter because…“When you are queen you will no longer have to go on foot.“ Blood everywhere. Prince noticed. He rejects each of them.

Snow White Common idea: Snow White wakes up from what looks like an eternal sleep.

Snow White Disney Brothers Grimm Prince Charming’s kiss wakes Snow White up Prince wants to display the “sleeping” Snow White in his house like a piece of art As he transports her, the piece of poison apple stuck in her throat becomes dislodged and she wakes up

Common idea: The Little Mermaid must become a human to find her prince

Hans Christian Anderson The Little Mermaid Disney Hans Christian Anderson Ariel has wobbly legs but learns to walk quickly Every step The Little Mermaid took made her feel like she was walking on sharp knives Even with the pain, she wants to walk and dance gracefully in order to impress the prince

Frozen Very Small Similarity

Frozen Disney’s Frozen was very loosely based on “The Ice Queen” by Hans Christian Anderson In order to honor that, the names of some of the characters are similar to the way Hans Christian Anderson’s name would be pronounced

The Little Mermaid Analysis Activity Our subject:

The Little Mermaid Most popular versions: 1837 fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson (read the text) 1975 film by Toei Animation (view clips) 1989 film by Disney (view clips)

WHY DO WE NEED TO PRACTICE THIS? Learning Goal Analyze the representation of a subject in a variety of artistic mediums WHY DO WE NEED TO PRACTICE THIS? End of Q4 Create our OWN representations of Acts/Scenes from Romeo and Juliet Analyze 2 film adaptations of Romeo and Juliet Read/Analyze Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Beginning of Q4 Disney-Inspired Analysis

Success Criteria For Learning Goal When asked to ‘analyze the representation of a subject in a variety of artistic mediums’… What types of skills (thinking/reading/writing) are required? (Can a volunteer record our brainstormed list on the white board?)

Success Criteria for Learning Goal Comprehension (Annotations/notes that show comprehension of each version) Compare/Contrast (Venn Diagram while viewing other versions) Analysis of Creator’s Choices (Author/Director) (How did the unique choices made by each creator impact the representation of the fairy tale?) Create (Write your own representation and include annotations explaining the choices YOU made)

First Steps: Read Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid” Read/summarize the text (summarizing chunks of the text in your own words as you read) Highlight vocabulary that you are unfamiliar with- define as you go in order to help you understand what you are reading Complete the compare/contrast box on the final page (comparing this version of the tale to your prior knowledge of The Little Mermaid) HW: Finish any reading (and annotating) that you do not complete in class for homework- due by the start of our next class
