2 Let’s think about some of the greatest stories ever told…

3 What do you know about fairy tale heroes and heroines?
The Hero? The Heroine? What do you know about fairy tale heroes and heroines?

4 Guess which story? The Gingerbread Man Shrek
Do you know the story of the Gingerbread Man? Do you know any other versions of the story? (the Runaway Pancake and The Wee Bannock are alternative versions of the story. How would you describe the Gingerbread Man’s character in Shrek?

5 What are witches like in fairy tales?
The White Witch The Snow Queen What are witches like in fairy tales? The White Witch from The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe doesn’t like children. She makes sure it is always winter in Narnia and never Christmas. The Snow Queen is a story by Hans Christian Andersen Have you read any other stories or seen films with ice or snow queens?

6 Old Crones Can you guess which stories?
The black and white picture shows the Russian witch Baba Yaga flying through the air. What do you notice about her house? The coloured picture is an illustration from Hansel and Gretel by the famous Edwardian illustrator Arthur Rackham. What is the witch doing in this picture? Baba Yage features in many Russian fairy Tales. She isn’t always evil. Occasionally she is responsible for good acts. She flies round in a pestle holding a broomstick and lives in a hut on a chicken’s leg. Mussorgsky wrote a movement call The Hut on Chicken’s Legs in his Pictures at an Exhibition suite. Click the picture of Baba Yaga to hear the music. Baba Yaga’s garden has a fence with skulls on top of the fence posts. Hansel and Gretel is one of Grimm’s Fairy Tales
