6 HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN  Danish author & poet  Born in Denmark in 1805  Tried being an actor, singer & dancer  1835 wrote & published the first of 156 fairy tales  Some popular fairy tales: The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale, Little Tuk, Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, The Angel, The Little Match Girl, The Fir Tree

7 CHARLES PERRAULT  Born in Paris, France in 1628  He became a high ranking civil servant and a member of the French Academy  In 1697 he published a book called “Histories or Tales of Past Times with Morals”  This book told stories of 80 Fairy Tales  Popular Fairy Tales: Sleeping Beauty Red Riding Hood Cinderella Puss in Boots Diamonds and Toads Bluebeard Hop O’ My Thumb

8 RABBI NAHMAN  Born in 1772 in Medzhibozh in Ukraine  In 1806 his infant son Shlomo Ephraim died from an unknown illness; this is when he turned to writing his stories  Wrote stories from summer of 1806-1810 when he died from tuberculosis  Created 13 new fairy tales and a number of parables and folktales  Fairy talesFolktales The Pirate PrincessThe Fixer The Gem PrinceThe Treasure The Merchant and the PoormanThe Turkey Prince The Lost Princess
