Review: Solving One-Step Equations

Solving one-step equations: A one-step equation means you only have to perform 1 mathematical operation to solve it. You can add, subtract, multiply or divide to solve a one-step equation.

Solving one-step equations: To undo an operation, use the OPPOSITE OPERATION + – – + x ÷ ÷ x

Solving an addition equation: t + 7 = 21 Example 1 Solving an addition equation: t + 7 = 21 Get rid of the 7 by subtracting 7 from both sides of the equation. -7 -7 t = 14

Solving a subtraction equation: g – 6 = 40 Example 2 Solving a subtraction equation: g – 6 = 40 Get rid of the 6 by adding its opposite to both sides of the equation. +6 +6 g = 46

Solving a multiplication equation: 8n = 32 Example 3 Solving a multiplication equation: 8n = 32 Get rid of the 8 by dividing both sides of the equation by 8. Here we “undo” multiplication by doing the opposite – division. 8n = 32 8 8 n = 4

Solving a division equation: k / 9 = 11 Example 4 Solving a division equation: k / 9 = 11 Get rid of the 9 by multiplying both sides of the equation by 9. Here we “undo” division by doing the opposite – multiplication. x 9 x 9 k = 99

Math Interactive Notebooks Mr. Diaz’s Math Class 2015-2016

Purpose of your Math Interactive Notebooks The purpose of the MIN is to enable you to be a creative, independent thinker and writer. MIN’s will be used for class notes and for other activities where you will be asked to express your own ideas and process the information presented by this class. This notebook is different from a traditional notebook because it requires you to think about everything that you write or draw in it.

Content Left side Right side Student processing Teacher directed Students process new ideas Students use illustrations, diagrams, flow charts, poetry, colors, matrices, cartoons and the like to understand new content Students explore opinions, clarify values, and ask questions about new ideas. Students review what they have learned and demonstrate mastery of material. Right side Teacher directed Students take notes during lectures This information should be regarded as “testable” and should be structured so that key ideas & concepts are clear.

How Will I Be Graded? A+ Notebooks will be graded on test dates. You should have all of your assignments and notes that the table of contents has listed. You will assess your own work before turning it into me. The notebook and your participation in class will account for about 30% of your grade! A+

“What if I’m absent?” If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain notebook assignments from either Another student The sample notebook Or the teacher Web page

What Materials Will I Need? Starting this Tuesday! Composition Notebook. Binder to storage classwork and other materials. Scissors and glue Pens – blue, black, red Pencils with erasers Colored pencils and/or markers (your choice)
