CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Activity time!

THINK. PAIR. SHARE. What are some positive ways to solve a conflict? What conflicts have you had in the past? What are some negative ways to solve a conflict?

What are conflicts? #1 Conflicts are disagreements in ideas, beliefs, or interests. Make a list of some things people could have a conflict over. (#2)

What can cause a conflict? #3 Act or event. Difference of opinion. Jealousy. Prejudice- an opinion or fear formed without having facts of firsthand knowledge. Table Talk- what else causes conflict? What do you think is the biggest cause of conflict in 6th grade (#4)? What do you think will cause conflict as you get older(#5)?

ARGUMENTS #6 Occur when disagreements are not settled or get out of hand.

What do we argue about? Property- not respecting other people’s property. Clashing personalities. Hurt feelings: Jealousy Feeling left out Underappreciated Gossip Teasing/Insults

PEER PRESSURE Feeling pressure from classmates or friends to do something you do not want to do or are not comfortable doing. Can pressure friends to argue with others rather than resolving conflict. Taking sides.

DIFFERENCES IN VALUES Values- Beliefs that you feel strongly about that guide the way you live.

SIGNS OF CONFLICT #7 The key to conflict resolution is to spot conflict early. Disagreement- all conflict begins with this. No matter how big or small the conflict is. Strong emotions- Building up of emotions over time. Body language and behavior- what does someone’s body language say about them?

Examples of conflict

An Example of Conflict… Waterboy What was the conflict in the video? What are some ways he could have avoided this conflict?

An Example of Conflict… Despicable Me What was the conflict in the video? What are some ways he could have avoided this conflict?

An Example of Conflict… Toy Story What was the conflict in the video? What are some ways he could have avoided this conflict?

An Example of Conflict What was the conflict in the video? Tangled What was the conflict in the video? What are some ways he could have avoided this conflict?

Avoiding Conflicts Not all conflicts are worth your time to resolve (Example: Being cut in the lunch line) STAY OUT OF IT- If it did not involve you, do not involve yourself. Walk away, ignore, or communicate to an adult.

Conflict Resolution

Negotiation #8 Process of talking directly to the other person to resolve a conflict.

Compromise vs. Collaborate #8 when both sides in a conflict agree to give up something to reach a solution that will satisfy everyone. Collaborate work together to achieve a goal. Both sides are able to put differences aside to complete a task.

Mediation #8 Resolving conflicts using a third party (trained). Need to be neutral.

NEGOTIATION #9 T- Take a time out T.A.L.K. Strategy T- Take a time out A- Allow each person to tell their side L- Let each person ask questions K- Keep brainstorming

Practice the TALK strategy #10 Your friend borrowed your favorite sweater or video game without asking. If you were finding yourself really upset over it, how could you use the TALK strategy to resolve the conflict. T A L K

Positive and Negative Solution Divide your circle into 8 pizza slices List 4 Positive Ways to solve conflict & 4 Negative ON THE BACK – Draw a small circle in the middle of paper.
