Definition Hypertension is a medical condition which causes someone to have abnormally high blood pressure.

Risk Factors Controllable  Being overweight/obese  Not being physically active  Using tobacco  Too much salt in your diet  Too much potassium in your diet  Too little vitamin D in your diet  Drinking too much alcohol Uncontrollable  Age  Family History  Race

Signs and Symptoms  Most people with high blood pressure have no symptoms, even if the pressure readings reach a dangerously high level.  Few people with high blood pressure could have headaches, but those signs and symptoms are not specific and usually do not occur until HBP has reached a severe or life threatening stage.

Diagnosis  Blood Pressure Test : if your readings are consistently higher than 120/80 mmHg you most likely have hypertension *Hypertension is referred to as the " silent killer " because the only way to be diagnosed is to regularly monitor your blood pressure

Treatment Options  Eat healthier food  Stop smoking  Losing weigh if overweight or obese  Reduce the amount of sodium in diet to less than 1,500 milligrams  Regular aerobic exercise  Limiting alcohol to two drinks a day for men, one for women

Statistics  75 Million American adults have hypertension  About 33% of Americans have Prehypertension (blood pressure higher than normal but not yet dangerous)  Only half of Americans with hypertension have it under control  In 2014, hypertension was the primary or contributing cause of death in more than 410,000 Americans  Treating hypertension cost the US $48.6 billion every year
