 Chronic condition – pancreas produces little or no insulin  Medically manageable  Sometimes called “juvenile diabetes”, usually diagnosed in children (hereditary)

 Chronic condition – effects how the body processes glucose (blood sugar).  The most common type  Medically treatable along with lifestyle changes  Insulin produced is ineffective  Pancreas produces insulin but the body doesn’t respond normally to insulin.

 Type 1 – Born with it, genetic, people can’t make their own insulin  Type 2 – Lifestyle, people are resistant to insulin ◦ Lack of exercise ◦ Obesity (risk factor) ◦ Diet

 Hyperglycemia ◦ Frequent urination ◦ Thirsty (dry mouth) ◦ Hunger – weight loss ◦ Fatigue ◦ Dry itchy skin ◦ More frequent infections ◦ Nausea

Hypoglycemia  ShakyNumbness  SweatyMood Swings  Rapid heart beat  Headaches  Hunger  Weakness  Fatigue  Impaired vision  Anxiety  Irritability  Dizziness

 Poor diet (processed foods, high sugar intake, large portion sizes) increases the chances of diabetes  Insulin is used to control glucose levels in blood.  A person with diabetes needs to eat sugar carbohydrates in small amounts throughout the day to manage sugar level.

 Regular monitoring  Insulin injections (insulin therapy)  Insulin pump  Medication  Eating a healthy diet  Exercise (stay active) Regularly  Avoid smoking and drinking

 29 million Americans have diabetes  1.5 million Americans have type 1 ◦ Only about half are diagnosed ◦ 5% of all diabetes  27.5 million Americans have type 2 ◦ 95% are type 2 ◦ 21 million are diagnosed ◦ 25.9% of seniors have diabetes ◦ 1 in 8 adults have type 2
