Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE GRAND KNIGHTS

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus INTRODUCTION There are many traits that Grand Knights can possess that make them effective leaders. The literature is filled with examples of leadership qualities that will help organizations function smoothly and efficiently. Those listed and the actions that describe them are essential and will lead to exemplary councils.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus 1. ORGANIZATION Appoints directors promptly, explains their responsibilities and elicits their commitment. Insure that forms are submitted on time. Insures that per capita taxes and other bills are paid on time. Follows the order of business at council meetings and uses proper protocol.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus ORGANIZATION Cont. Reads correspondence before council meetings and is prepared to share the information in them. Attends state, diocesan and district meetings and shares information learned at them. Uses the calendar and organization tools in the Supreme issued binder.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus ORGANIZATION Cont. Develops a calendar of activities in cooperation with officers and directors at the beginning of the fraternal year. Develops an annual budget with input from officers and directors based on planned activities.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus 2. COMMUNICATION Makes an effort to know and recognize members at council meetings and other events. Insures that a council newsletter is regularly published. Meets regularly with the Deputy Grand Knight, Program Director and Financial Secretary to review finances and upcoming programs.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus COMMUNICATION Cont. Attends council and parish activities as the “face” of the council. Periodically meets with the council chaplain to discuss the “health” of the council. Articulates council needs and solicits member cooperation to address them.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus COMMUNICATION Cont. Recognizes Knights and Families of the Months and other volunteers for their service.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Possesses a vision of where the council should be at the end of the fraternal year. Sets goals and share them with members. Works with directors and chairpersons to hold quality programs.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Cont. Regularly works with the membership director to achieve membership quotas. Regularly discusses progress on insurance quotas with the council field agent. Conducts business meetings in an efficient manner.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE Cont. Works to attain the Star Council and Michigan Achievement Awards.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus PROBLEM SOLVER Open to suggestions and criticism and addresses them respectfully. Works with the program director and chairpersons to address problems that arise in planning programs. Makes practical suggestions when presented with problems and challenges.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus PROBLEM SOLVER Cont. Remain calm and have patience with those who may have difficulty understanding decisions. Think analytically about solutions and present ideas while considering other suggestions. Flexibility in considering the suggestions of others.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus PROBLEM SOLVER Cont. Embraces suggestions for new programs and respectfully discusses their feasibility.

Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus ENTHUSIASTIC Embraces the roles and responsibilities of the Grand Knight Displays humor appropriately. Enjoys interacting with members and the public. Confident in making decisions and presenting the reasons for them.
