COLLEGIUM OF THE IUCN ACADEMY OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAW Eastern Cape, South Africa, 5 th July 2011 THE ACADEMY’S TRAINING THE TEACHERS (TTT) PROJECT Prof essor Rob Fowler, Chair, IUCN Academy of Environmental Law

AIMS OF TRAINING THE TEACHERS (TTT) COURSE The Training the Teachers (TTT) course has been developed by the IUCN Academy of Environmental law to promote the teaching of environmental law around the world. The TTT course is intended to increase the number of environmental law courses taught in Law Schools in countries where presently there are few such courses taught. The TTT course will be delivered at two separate levels: – BASIC course (TTT1) : for legal scholars who have little or no previous experience of teaching environmental law and who are willing to commit to developing and teaching a course in environmental law – ADVANCED course (TTT2): for legal scholars who are very experienced in teaching environmental law, to prepare them to present the TTT1 course to legal scholars within their own country.

SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE TTT BASIC COURSE The overall aim of the Basic Course (TTT1) is to enable the participants to design and deliver a high quality course in environmental law within their Law School’s law degree or program. The TTT1 course has three specific aims: – First, to help the participants to understand the scope and content of environmental law within their country (including the relevance of regional and international environmental law); – Second, to demonstrate to the participants the wide range of teaching and assessment methods that can be used in an environmental law course; and – Third, to have the participants engage during the training in a project to design their own course in environmental law,.

SPECIFIC AIMS OF THE ADVANCED COURSE (TTT2) The overall aim of the Advanced Course (TTT2) is to prepare the participants to take part (with Academy trainers) in the delivery of the TTT1 course to academic colleagues within their country subsequently. The basic approach is to present most elements of the TTT1 course to the participants in order to explain the content of the TTT1 course, the various teaching methodologies demonstrated and the course design project. As participants in the TTT2 course are experts in environmental law, there is also some opportunity for discussion of recent developments in environmental law from both comparative and international perspectives.

CONTENT OF THE TTT 1 and 2 COURSEs Days 1 and 2: Overview of the scope and content of environmental law and its relationship to other disciplines Day 3: International environmental law, environmental rights and half-day field-trip Day 4: Role-play exercise; assessment options; research skills; and discussion of approaches to the design and delivery of an environmental law course. Day 5: – TTT1: Environmental Law Course design project and discussion of challenges in developing and delivering an environmental law course – TTT2: Recent developments in environmental law and discussion of how to deliver TTT1 courses in the future

Participants in the TTT 1 Basic Course will receive from the Academy a Certificate of Attendance at the end of Day 5 and a Certificate of Completion when they have presented an environmental law course subsequently.

FOLLOW-UP FROM THE TTT 2 ADVANCED COURSE Participants in the TTT Advanced Course will be asked to contribute to the delivery of TTT 1 Basic courses in their country subsequently Teams of 3-4 participants will work with 1-2 trainers from the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law to prepare for and deliver the TTT Basic Course with their own country/region In Session 19 (Day 5), a discussion will be held with participants concerning how future TTT1 courses may be organised and commitments sought in this regard Participants in the TTT Advanced Course will receive from the Academy a Certificate of Attendance at the end of Day 5 and a Certificate recognising them as an Academy Trainer when they have delivered a TTT1 course subsequently.
