3 What an academic does? Teaching (lecturing, tutoring). Maybe online or classes. Involves writing and delivering lectures Creating a curriculum Setting assessment and marking Using online technology such as blackboard.

6 What to do in your candidature
Try and complete in a timely manner Full time is easier than part time Go to at least one conference a year (quality conference) Prepare a manuscript Get feedback Network

7 What to do in your candidature
Plan your publications from your thesis and aim to get at least 2/3 out before your candidature is over. Aim for A* and A journals (see ABDC list) and journals with high impact factors (See ISI) Get teaching and research experience (tutor and/or RA). Try some guest lectures Collaborate with your supervisor and any other senior academic willing to mentor you. Get involved in projects external to your PhD but not too many!

8 When you are close to completing
Apply for jobs! Common places to look are: seek.com, The Australian (Wednesday), The Age, careerpne.com.au,unijobs.com.au,academicjobsaustralia.com and individual University websites. What about international? Academy of Management, jobs.ac.uk, websites specific to countries. Attach a document that addresses all of the selection criteria carefully, your cv and a covering letter highlighting your achievements and why you are suitable.

Education (include quotes from your examiner’s reports) Awards and Honours Academic and Industry Appointments Leadership positions Teaching experience Research positions Current projects

11 Format of a CV Publications (journal, books/edited books, book chapters, Conference papers published, conference presentations), working papers, technical reports) In your publication list indicate ISI ranking, impact factor, ABDC ranking and any citations. (see ABDC website, Web of Knowledge and use google scholar for citations as well as web of knowledge and Harzing’s Publish or Perish program)

Thesis examination At least two referees with one being external to your University.

14 Selection Criteria for level B
Essential: A PhD in a management related area. Demonstrated research specialisation in one or more of the School’s key areas of management expertise; namely Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations, Organisational Development, Human Resource Development or Supply Chain Management.

15 Selection criteria for Level B
Demonstrated knowledge, ability and excellence in teaching at the tertiary educational level in at least two of the following areas at postgraduate and undergraduate level:  Management  Human Resource Management  Human Resource Development  Industrial Relations  Strategic Management  International Management  Organisational Change and Development  Supply Chain Management  Business Ethics/Corporate Social Responsibility/Corporate Governance

16 Selection Criteria for Level B
Demonstrated skills in unit development, management and administration. Demonstrated research skills and experience including scholarly publications. Demonstrated commitment to work in participative teams to make and implement decisions regarding research, teaching and administration. Skills and experience in the use of the internet including electronic research related databases. Awareness of OHS responsibilities and willingness to attend OHS training as required.

17 Selection Criteria for Level B
Willingness to commit to Victoria University’s values which are: Knowledge and skills, and critical and imaginative inquiry for their capacity to transform individuals and the community. Equality of opportunity for students and staff. Diversity for its contribution to creativity and the enrichment of life. Co-operation as the basis of engagement with local and international communities. Integrity, respect and transparency in personal and collaborative action. The pursuit of excellence in everything we do.

18 Selection Criteria for Level B
Desirable: Practical experience in a field of business or management relevant to the teaching or research interests of the School. Established links with outside organisations that are of benefit to the University.

19 In the interview Stress: Publication record (esp. quality outputs).
Future publications and projects. Demonstrate a research agenda that is clear. Include grants and future publications. Teaching experience, esp. if good scores. Leadership (although lower expectations of a level B). Ask your mentor to help with a list of potential questions.

20 Potential Questions Tell us about your research? Where do you see your research over the next 5 years? What is your area of expertise in terms of teaching? Demonstrate how you showed leadership capabilities. Have you administered a course before?
