Exercise for specific groups Lesson 1

Aims and objectives Today, we shall be starting one of our two new units: – Exercise for specific groups. Our aims are: – To have an overview of the unit. – To look at how the criteria is awarded for each assignment. – To look at the four providers of facilities for specific groups. – To look at the specific groups.

The unit There are three assignments in the unit: – Assignment 1: P1, M1, D1 – Know about the provision of exercise for specific groups. – Assignment 2: P2, P3, P4, M2 – Know the benefits of exercise for different specific groups, the exercise referral process and be able to prescribe exercise for specific groups. – Assignment 3: P5, P6, M3, D2 – Be able to plan, deliver and review an exercise session for a specific group.

Specific groups Class, what do you think is meant by the term ‘specific group’? What examples of specific groups can you think of? The ones that we have to look at, according to the unit specification, are: – Disabled people. – Antenatal and postnatal. – Older adults. – Children and young people. – Referred clients: Such as the obese and those with certain medical conditions. For assignment three, it is most likely that you will be planning, delivering and evaluating a session for disabled people. – Specifically, a selection of Springfield learners from the College.

To get us going… Provision for sport falls under three main categories: – Public – Private – Voluntary There is also a fourth category: – Partnerships Your task is to write down everything that you think you know about these areas. – You have three minutes.

The areas of provision Private: – Examples would include: David Lloyd, Fitness First, The Third Space, Bannatyne’s, Next Generation, Gymbox. Your task is to write down everything that you expect to see and experience in one of these leisure/fitness centres. – You have two minutes.

The areas of provision Public – Examples would include what? Council provided facilities. – Such as? You have two minutes to write down what things you would expect to see in a public provider. – You have two minutes.

The areas of provision Voluntary – Examples would include what? Local sports clubs run not for profit. – Such as? What kinds of characteristics would these providers have?

The areas of provision Partnerships – Examples would include what? Oaklands College and their partners. What characteristics would they possess?

Review questions Working individually, you have ten minutes to formulate answers to these questions: – What do you think are the benefits of working with specific groups? – What problems may you face when training a person from a specific group? – Explain why the public sector is most likely to cater for the needs of specific groups.

Assignment time It may seem strange, but we are going to start assignment 1. Your task: – Select three specific groups – Go online and research a leisure provider near you Everyone active David Lloyd Fitness First A gym – Answer these questions: What type of provider are they (public, private, voluntary)? What facilities do they have? Which of your three groups are best provided for by your centre, and why? What can your provider do to improve their provision for all of your three groups?

Conclusion Do you now know about the three main providers and the lesser one of partners? How does this relate to what you need to know according to the specification and assessment guidelines? Are you beginning to appreciate that there are specific groups in society and that their needs may different to other groups?
