Online Engagement IAP2 webinar – May 2016

Agenda How do I choose the right tool? How do I ensure everyone can participate? How do I measure success? How do I get people to use engage? How do I manage risk? I’ve got a bunch of input. What do I do now?

Strategies to ensure equity Partner with libraries or other community organizations with public computers to advertise participation opportunity. Use kiosks in public places with tablets that allow people to participate. Pair online engagement with in-person opportunities – Focus groups with groups less likely to participate online – Intercept events (bus surveys, tabling at grocery stores, joint events with community based organizations) Ensure that online tools are compatible with smartphones as some groups are more likely to have access to a phone than a computer.

Simple tools! You can do this! Online Open Houses

Simple tools! You can do this! Mapping Tools

Simple tools! You can do this! Online surveys

Complex tools! Great, but need specialist help. Build a System Tool

Audience building Most effective: Snowball/ambassadors – word of mouth Social media – Facebook, Twitter blasts – boring but effective Tabling and intercept events Repeated online outreach at sequential milestones Media outreach Less effective (but sometimes necessary): Postcards/newsletters Newspaper ads

Results: What do you do after you’ve collected input As you design your tool, think about how you’re going to use the input – Open ended vs. close ended questions – Mapping? Ask for demographic information Code and summarize results Use your online platform to close the loop
