BY: NIKKA GAMALINDA SERVANT LEADERSHIP

ROBERT K. GREENLEAF While servant leadership is a timeless concept, the phrase “ servant leadership ” was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in In the essay, Greenleaf said… “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SERVANT LEADER? A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid,” servant leadership is different. The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.

QUALITIES OF A SERVANT LEADERSHIP Servant leadership approach defines the leader’s role as serving the needs of others. According to this approach, the primary mission of the leader is to develop employees and help them reach their goals. Servant leaders put their employees first, understand their personal needs and desires, empower them, and help them develop in their careers. Unlike mainstream management approaches, the overriding objective in servant leadership is not necessarily getting employees to contribute to organizational goals. Instead, servant leaders feel an obligation to their employees, customers, and the external community.

WHY DID I CHOOSE SERVANT LEADERSHIP? I personally chose “Servant Leadership” because I’ve always wanted to influence and serve others before myself. I strongly feel that I sacrifice my own well-being to help employees succeed, especially my subordinates. And by doing this, it makes me feel good - not only has a human, but as a leader as well. My favorite quote that I love to share with others is… "As I reach the highest levels, I will not forget to take the others with me to be the leaders of tomorrow. "
