Safety Education – Safer parking around school. By Yr5 Yellow Class

What we did: We filled in a questionnaire to see what we knew about safe parking and how safe we felt around school. We had lessons and discussions about the effects of dangerous parking and which types of parking were dangerous and which were safe. We went outside to find examples of what we thought was safe parking or dangerous parking. We made posters for around school as well as our healthy schools display board showing how to park safely and what could happen if people didn’t park safely. We made videos for parents and put them on the website. We are going to write letters to parents informing them about safe parking. We filled in the questionnaire again to see what we had learnt and to see if we felt any safer around school – it was shown that we do feel safer!

What parking safely involves. E – “Not double parking.” MH – “Not parking on the kerb.” B – “Not parking on double yellow lines or corners.” MG- “Not parking where you’re not supposed to like the staff car park.” MJ – “Letting people cross the road safely.”

Why we made videos about parking. E – “To let people know how to park safely.” MH – “To tell people how not to cause crashes.” B – “To get through that people should park safely.” MG- “So people don’t get injured.” MJ – “To show people where and where not to park.” E – “It’s coming from children and so they should know better.” MH – “They know it’s us telling them.” MG – “To tell adults.” MJ – “Kids are the ones who would get injured the most.”

How and why school is better now. B – “Emergency services can get through to an emergency.” E – “Everyone’s safer.” MG – “People can get through.” MH – “People don’t get hurt.” B – “There wont be as many accidents.” E – “So we can get to school on time so we don’t miss lessons and not learn as much.” MJ – “More people will come to our school because we have really safe parking.”
