2 Why Bus Safety? Travelling by bus is safe! Getting TO and FROM bus stop: – Mostly afternoons (85%) – When bus still there – Not checking clear both directions – Children 5-12 yrs at risk Don’t cross on your own - get help crossing BUT children DO get hurt when....

3 Five places to be safe 1. Getting to bus 2. Waiting at bus stop 3. Getting on bus 4. Travelling on bus 5. Getting off bus You are role models for younger ones... It can save lives!

4 Getting to bus Check bag, allow time Choose safe route, walk with adult Smallest child in front Bright clothes

5 Waiting for the Bus Wait away from road (but see bus coming) Sit or stand (not playing) Stand back when bus arrives

6 Getting on bus Wait until bus stopped Younger children first Single file, no pushing Carry bag in front

7 Travelling on bus Bags under seats or on knees Nothing in aisles Older children stand, others sit back in seat Respect driver

8 Getting off the bus Wait for bus to STOP before getting up Handrail, no pushing Stand well away from bus

9 Do you have to Cross? Ask Parents to park on same side, away from bus Or on other side, they can cross to meet you Parents should never ask you to cross to them Show your parents the kerb drill!

10 KERB DRILL 1. Safe place to cross 2. One step back 3. Look, listen THINK 4. Cross straight, quickly 5. Look and listen when crossing
