Highland Scots were extremely loyal to the King of England and the royal government of North Carolina. After a failed Scottish rebellion, they were given pardons in exchange for an oath of loyalty. They were also allowed to settle in North Carolina with no taxes for 10 years.

The Scots-Irish were Scottish dissenters (Presbyterians) who moved to Ireland in the 1600’s. Eventually, many of these people moved to North America for more economic and religious freedom.

In the 1730’s, Scot-Irish immigrants began to make their way into North Carolina. Most of them settled in the Piedmont, though there were settlements of Scots-Irish in the Coastal Plains too.

German Immigrants began to move into North Carolina around 1747, settling in the piedmont, first in Rowan County. The Old Stone House, Granite Quarry, Rowan County, built in 1766
