By the 1700’s the Colonies were considered part of the British Empire. What does this mean? Development of a common tongue Development of a common culture Based on British “Common Law”

By 1773 we have three distinct regions: The New England Colonies Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire The Middle Colonies New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware The Southern Colonies Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia Each with unique characteristics

New England: Typically came looking for religious freedom Farming was difficult: rocky, hilly Lots of timber Turn to fishing and boats Economy built on: Small farms Lumber Fishing Shipbuilding Trade

Middle Colonies: Rich soil in New Jersey and Delaware allows for more farming Valleys and wooded mountains in New York and Pennsylvania provide timber Farmers could raise a variety of crops and livestock Some turn to fishing and boats Economy built on: Similar to New England, but more diverse

Southern Colonies: Businesses brought settlers here. Broad rivers, vast wetlands Farming was EASY Cash crops: tobacco, rice, etc. Turn to plantations Economy built on: LARGE farms

Government All colonies were settled with permission of the king. King issues charter, a document which describes the land’s borders and how it would be governed. King sends a governor too. Could overrule the assemblies. Due to distance from England, they needed to be able to make their own laws too. Government developed from the purpose of the settlement.

Government Colonies were “more democratic” than England. Voting was still restricted to landowning males. Women, servants, slaves, artisans with no land could not vote.

9 Question for next week. Why were only landowners given the right to vote?
