2 Colonial Regions

3 New England Colonies (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire) Climate/Geography: Rocky, forests, hilly, poor soil, long winters, limited farming Settlers: English, Puritan Farmers

4 Major Economic Activities: small farms, merchants, craftsmen, boatbuilding, whaling, lumber, fish Local Government: Town meetings; could speak out; vote; high degree of self- government

5 Middle Colonies (New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware) Climate/ Geography: fertile soil, flat land, swift rivers, wide valleys, warmer Settlers: Quakers, Dutch, French, Germans, Scot-Irish; diverse

6 Major Economic Activities: Farming grains, livestock, cash crops, mining, trade Local Government: Mixture of town meetings and county governments

7 Southern Colonies (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) Climate/Geography: Rich, fertile soil, broad coastal plains, tidewater, backcountry (Located in or near the Appalachian Mountains in the far western part of most of the colonies) Settlers: English aristocrats, planters, small farmers, slaves

8 Major Economic Activity: plantations: tobacco, rice, indigo; slavery, fewer crafts and industry Local Government: Counties were basic unit; sheriffs and justice of the peace appointed by governor
