New England (Settled by Puritans/Pilgrims) Escape from religious persecution – believed England was still too Catholic under Elizabeth Established a “covenant community” through the Mayflower Compact Intolerant of other religions Dissenters challenged relationship between religion and government Practiced “Athenian Democracy” at town meetings(everyone must vote) Puritans valued hard work Ship building, fishing, lumber, and eventually manufacturing

6. The Southern Colonies  People primarily seeking economic opportunity  Cavaliers-nobility who received land grants from the King of England  Poor immigrants and indentured servants seeking better lives  Cash crops were popular (tobacco, cotton, sugar cane)

Est in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London Originally settled by Cavaliers (nobility) who received large land grants from the King of England Poor immigrants followed seeking better lives by working on plantations for the Cavaliers The first indentured servants were white English immigrants. The first Africans came to VA in 1619 as indentured servants Virginia (Jamestown)

9.  Southern colonies = cash crops  Tobacco, rice, indigo  Strong belief in private ownership and free enterprise  Appalachia = small scale farming Plantations The southern colonies were very humid, hot, and slightly unbearable. Indentured servants did not want to work on plantations leading to slave labor Slaves were cheap labor
