3 Why did the Europeans settle in the English colonies? New England (Settled by Puritans/Pilgrims) Escape from religious persecution – believed England was still too Catholic under Elizabeth Established a “covenant community” through the Mayflower Compact Intolerant of other religions Dissenters challenged relationship between religion and government Practiced “Athenian Democracy” at town meetings(everyone must vote) Puritans valued hard work Ship building, fishing, lumber, and eventually manufacturing

4 Rhode Island  Dissenters of the Puritan faith fled to the area now known as Rhode Island under Roger Williams  He didn’t believe English could claim Indian’s lands  Government officials should not be able to punish settlers for religious beliefs  Believed in free worship

5 The Middle Colonies Settled by the English, Dutch, and Germans Religious freedom and economic opportunity Shipbuilding, farming, and trading New York and Philadelphia became major shipping areas Home to many religious groups Quakers (Pennsylvania) – nice furniture Hugenots and Jews (New York) Presbyterians (New Jersey) Flexible social structure Business owners, small farmers, and skilled artisans NOT VIRGINIA!

6 The Southern Colonies  People primarily seeking economic opportunity  Cavaliers-nobility who received land grants from the King of England  Poor immigrants and indentured servants seeking better lives  Cash crops were popular (tobacco, cotton, sugar cane)

7 Est in 1607 by the Virginia Company of London Originally settled by Cavaliers (nobility) who received large land grants from the King of England Poor immigrants followed seeking better lives by working on plantations for the Cavaliers The first indentured servants were white English immigrants. The first Africans came to VA in 1619 as indentured servants Virginia (Jamestown)

8  As the first permanent English settlement in America, Virginia est. the first elected gov, the House of Burgesses  Now the General Assembly  Large landowners dominated government and society, keeping a close relationship with England Virginia Government

9  Southern colonies = cash crops  Tobacco, rice, indigo  Strong belief in private ownership and free enterprise  Appalachia = small scale farming Plantations The southern colonies were very humid, hot, and slightly unbearable. Indentured servants did not want to work on plantations leading to slave labor Slaves were cheap labor
