Mrs. Walls April 2015

Introduction  Most of us use the internet every day, but many of us do not use it safely.  Internet safety is an important topic that students must be taught. You have to think smart if you are going to use the internet.  The internet can provide a wealth of information, but unfortunately not all sources on the internet are safe.  If you know the rules and follow them, you will be able to work safely on the internet.

Problem  Imagine you walk up behind your little brother and he is playing a game on the internet. The game looks pretty fun but you notice that he is talking to people in a chat room while playing the game. You ask him who he is talking to and he just shrugs his shoulders. You know that you should never talk to strangers or give people you don't know information about you or your family. You know you need to do something, but you’re not sure what to do.

Task  You will begin your journey by learning about some of the safety problems internet users face.  It is important for people to know what is out there on the internet that could potentially be a problem.  After identifying the problem, you are going to uncover some rules that will help internet users be more safe on the internet.  As you learn about internet safety, you are going to create a power point presentation to share with your brother and other younger kids to teach them how to work safely on the internet.

Start a PowerPoint Presentation  Open up a new power point presentation.  Make a title page that includes the title of the presentation (This could be "Internet Safety" or something else that tells what it's going to be about.),  Add your name and a picture.  Save this as "Internet Safety" on your computer.

Tips to Remember  Watch the following video: Safe Web Surfing: Top Tips for Kids and Teens Online Safe Web Surfing: Top Tips for Kids and Teens Online (5 minutes) Note: You will watch the video on the projection screen due to restrictions of YouTube.  Create a new slide on your PowerPoint  Title the slide: Tips to Remember  List the four tips everyone should remember

Safe CyberSpace Surfing  Click on the title above to open the article.  You can read it on your own or click the "listen" button to have it read to you.  Go back to your power point presentation and create a new slide.  Record the three guidelines for Safe Cyberspace Surfing on this page. Include a title, the three rules and at least one picture.

Use Your NetSmartz  Net Smartz Kids is a great website for learning about how to be Net Smart. Go back to your power point slide and create a new slide. Record the rules you should follow to protect your online identity. Include a title, the rules and at least one picture.Click here to read the article.
