Matter Exists in different physical states

States of Matter Solid-Liquid-Gas When substances change from one state to another, the molecules in the substance do NOT change The arrangement of the molecules change The state of a substance depends on the space between its particles and on the way which the particles move

Solid Fixed volume & shape Particles are close together Particles can vibrate, but are fixed in one place Each particle is attached to others so it can’t move from one place to another

Liquid Fixed volume, but not a fixed shape Take on the shape of the container they are in Particles are close together, but can slide past each other

Gas No fixed volume or shape Take on the shape and volume of the container they are in Particles are far apart and move around freely in all directions (a lot of space between them) Space around them can increase or decrease with changes in temperature and pressure.

Which is it? SOLID Why? 1. Particles are close together 2. Particles are not changing place

Which is it? LIQUID Why? 1. Particles are sliding past each other 2. Particles are able to change place

Which is it? GAS Why? 1. Particles are moving freely 2. Particles are able to change place

Ticket Out Person in seat 1: Do the particles in a solid move? If so, how? Person in seat 2: How do the particles in a liquid move? Person in seat 3: What can you tell me about the volume & mass of a gas? Person in seat 4: What can you tell me about the shape of a liquid?
