1 States Of Matter

2 Three Main States of matter

3 Particles in a solid are close together
solids A state of matter where particles are tightly bound. Solids maintain volume and shape. Particles in a solid are close together The particles are constantly vibrating

4 Particles in a liquid are close together but loose
liquids State of matter where particles are loosely bound. Liquids have a set volume but can change shape. Particles in a liquid are close together but loose The particles are constantly vibrating and shifting around

5 Particles in a gas are far apart
Gases State of matter where particles are unbound. Gases can change shape and volume. Particles in a gas are far apart The particles are constantly bouncing around

6 Changing states

7 Changing States using temperature
Adding thermal energy increases the kinetic energy of the molecules Add Heat (energy) Solids  liquid  Gas Remove Heat (energy) Gas liquid  solids

8 Changing states using pressure
Increasing the pressure presses the molecules closer together Increase pressure Gas  liquid  solid Decrease pressure Solid  Liquid  Gas
