1 States of Matter What is Matter?
Describes anything that has mass and takes up space. Different kinds of matter have different characteristics

2 States of Matter Matter can exist as Solids Liquids Gases

3 How do they compare? STATE VOLUME ARRANGEMENT OF PARTICLES
Motion of Particles Attraction between particles Density Solid Definite volume Has it’s own shape Not compressible Definite close Slow Strong High

4 How do they compare? STATE VOLUME ARRANGEMENT OF PARTICLES
Motion of Particles Attraction between particles Density Liquid Definite volume No definite shape Not compressible Random close Moderate

5 How do they compare? STATE VOLUME ARRANGEMENT OF PARTICLES
Motion of Particles Attraction between particles Density Gas No definite volume No definite shape Compressible Random Far apart Fast Little to none Low

6 How do they compare?

7 Changes of State In order to change to a different state of matter you must increase or decrease the temperature. Temperature measures the amount of energy of a certain amount of molecules. The higher the temperature, the faster the molecules move.

8 Changes of State Melting point – the temperature at which water changes from solid to liquid. Boiling point – the temperature at which water changes from liquid to a gas.
