1 The Stages of Matter Solid Liquid Gas

2 Solids Particles in a solid are tightly packed together in a regular pattern The particles vibrate but do not move from place to place A solid maintains its shape

3 Liquids Particles of a liquid are close together but do not have a regular pattern These particles vibrate, move about and slide past each other A liquid takes the shape of it’s container

4 Gas The particles of a gas are far apart with no pattern
These particles vibrate and move freely at high speeds A gas takes the shape of its container and can change volume

5 States of Matter (write this down)
Solid - The molecules of a solid are tightly packed and do not move very far. A solid holds it’s shape. Liquid - The molecules of a liquid are close together but move around a lot. A liquid takes the shape of its’ container. Gas - The molecules of a gas are far apart and move quickly. A gas takes the shape of it’s container and expands or shrinks to fill its container.

6 The Addition Of Heat Solid Liquid Gas (Ice) (Water) (Steam)

7 Changing from State to State
With the addition or removal of heat, one substance can be either a solid a liquid or a gas melting freezing condensation evaporation

8 Changing from a solid to a liquid
Melting Changing from a solid to a liquid (+ heat)

9 Changing from a liquid to a solid
Freezing Changing from a liquid to a solid (- heat)

10 Changing from a liquid to a gas
Evaporation Changing from a liquid to a gas (+ heat)

11 Changing from a gas to a liquid
Condensation Changing from a gas to a liquid (- heat)

12 melting freezing condensation evaporation
Quiz Time! Which process is occurring? melting freezing condensation evaporation
