Changes in State By Mr. V. Calzada

Three States of Matter  There are three states of matter.  A solid has a definite shape and definite volume.  A liquid has a definite volume but no definite shape.  A gas does not have definite shape or volume  Most matter exists in one or more states

Particles of Matter - Solid  Particles in matter are in motion.  In a solid, the particles are very close together and there is very space between them.  The only thing the particles can do is vibrate in place. As a result, solids have (fixed) definite shape and volume.

Particles of Matter - Liquid  Particles are not tightly packed in a liquid, as a result they move more freely.  It can flow and take the shape of the container.  Particles can move over each other. Liquids do not have definite shape but they do have definite volume.

Particles of Matter - Gas  The particles in a gas are packed together the least.  Particles move the fastest in this state.  Particles take the shape of the container. Matter in a gas state does not have definite shape or definite volume.

Summary – States of Matter

Changes Between States of Matter

Melting and Boiling Points
