Types of Stress Eustress “Good Stress” Causes you to perform, complete tasks Distress “Bad Stress” Causes negative reactions in the body

Types of Stressors Biological i.e. – illness, disability, or injury Environmental i.e. – poverty, pollution, crowding, noise, natural disasters Cognitive How you perceive a situation Personal Behavior i.e. – negative affects in the body due to tobacco use, drug use, lack of physical activity, etc… Life Situation i.e. – death of a pet, divorce of parents, relationship trouble, etc…

The Body’s Response Stage 1 – Alarm Often referred to as “fight or flight” Body prepares to stand up and fight or run away Stage 2 – Resistance The body adapts to the rush of adrenaline and are able to perform “impossible” tasks like lifting a car off someone Stage 3 – Fatigue Exposure to stress is prolonged and the body loses the ability to adapt to the situation

Effects of Stress Psychosomatic Responses (physical reactions that result from stress rather than injury) Headache Approximately 70% of all people in the world have at least one stress related headache a year High Blood Pressure Prolonged stress can cause an increase in cholesterol which causes blocked arteries and high blood pressure. High blood pressure leads to heart disease and stroke. Weakened Immune System Reduces ability to fight disease Chronic colds, flu, infections, standard sickness is worsened

Depression A prolonged feeling of helplessness, hoplessness, and sadness Reactive Depression – response to a stressful situation such as death Tends to go away as person learns to cope with the situation Major Depression Requires treatment May develop from reactive depression or from a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Stress Relief Project Each student will be assigned a stress relief topic You are to research the topic for the following information: Origin of the stress relief method (history) Explanation of what is involved with the technique At least two benefits from engaging (besides relieving stress) At least one local business that performs the technique (name, phone, address, website, contact person) After completing your research you are to create a brochure highlighting your topic to the class
