What are we going to learn today?? Content- –Students will be able to define basic terms related to geography, tell how to use a map to locate themselves, and differentiate between physical and human geography

What is Geography?  The study of all the aspects of the earth.  Physical Mountains, Lakes, Oceans etc.  Human People, Environmental Impact, Cultures etc.  Mere names of places...are not geography...Geography has higher aims than this: it seeks to classify phenomena [natural and political], to compare, to generalize, to ascend from effects to causes, and, in doing so, to trace out the great laws of nature and to mark their influences upon man....In a word Geography is a Science–a thing not of mere names but of argument and reason, of cause and effect.

Physical Geography The study of the physical aspects of the Earth. –Landforms, Oceans –Animals, Ecosystems –Natural Resources

Human Geography  Explores the people and cultures of the world and their impacts on it.  Culture  Political systems  Social systems  Economic systems  Characteristics of various peoples Food Religion Movement

Where am I?? Spatial Analysis- –locating your space and evaluating it in relation to someplace else –In other words finding your way between 2 places

Space… The Final Frontier.  What is out there??  Are we the only ones in the universe??  How can we find our way around??  Earth- the third rock from the sun  Warm enough to survive, but not be scorched.  Heliocentric Theory-  Copernicus  The planets revolve around the sun.  Major shift in thinking for the time, upset many people

Earth… The Third Rock from the Sun Rotates on an axis –Takes 24 hours to complete one rotation –Constant 23 ½ degree angle. Orbits the sun –Takes 365¼ days to make one revolution Leap Year

The Seasons

Finding Our Way Around the Planet

Equator- the imaginary line dividing the northern and southern hemispheres. Prime Meridian-the imaginary line dividing the eastern and western hemispheres.

A Big Puzzle

Pangaea Supercontinent theorized by Alfred Wegener Name means “all lands”

Globes and Maps  Cartography-the study and creation of maps  Various types of maps  Representations to help us find locations on the earth.  Latitude and Longitude  Absolute vs. Relative location  Map Tools Scale Compass Rose Grid Legend  Interactive Tutorial (6-7)

Regions Formal Regions- established by administrative forces or physical characteristics. –States, Countries, Valleys, River Deltas Functional Regions- defined by a common purpose –TV station markets, Marketing Routes- Silk Road; Ho Chi Minh Trail Perceptual Regions- Regions identified by people’s perceptions –Dixie; the Bible Belt; the Sunbelt; the southwest

What did we learn today? Content- –Students will be able to define basic terms related to geography, tell how to use a map to locate themselves, and differentiate between physical and human geography
