WE ARE MOVING ON! How is Dual Enrollment Reshaping the First-Year Student?

ABOUT US Jennifer MacDonald, M.A., M.S.Ed. Assistant Director for Advisement and Programming Hollie Daniels, M.Ed. Dual-Enrollment Advisor

WHAT IS MOVE ON WHEN READY? Senate Bill 132 became effective in July of 2015, establishing the new Move on When Ready (MOWR) program. This bill allows high school students (grades 9-12) to enroll at colleges/universities across Georgia to earn high school and college credit. MOWR covers 100% of tuition for approved courses and all mandatory non-course related fees. Students are only responsible for course fees and optional expenses.

FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE: ACCEL TO MOWR First-Year Experience serves as the academic home for two groups of students: 1) those who are dual-enrolled in high school and Georgia Southern; and 2) degree-seeking students who enter the university without a declared major. Promoting active major exploration from the point students are accepted into Georgia Southern, FYE helps them make informed decisions about their majors by the end of their first year as a degree-seeking student. Advising Major Exploration Growth in numbers Classes that create pathway for major Call for more guidance and direction Requiring matriculating seniors to declare majors

GEORGIA SOUTHERN Current enrollment is over 220 students from more than 25 high schools Students can choose from over 125 approved courses Enrollment can be full-time or part-time Students must be at least 16 years old or a Junior or Senior in high school

TRANSITIONING FOR SUCCESS In the working book: Getting the Most of College Schlossberg and Chickering used the Transition Theory to explain the transition process of college students as: moving in moving through moving out AcademicSocialPersonal

TRANSITIONING AS MOWR Moving In New campus New teachers Selecting and registering for classes More homework Local support system Moving Through Balancing high school, family, friends, and work Staying focused Maintaining GPA Moving Out Determining major Applying to college Applying for scholarships/financial aid Relocating/first year live on requirement Moving away from support system

TRANSITIONING FROM MOWR TO FIRST-YEAR Moving In Moving away from home Another new campus New teachers Cost of attendance Moving Through Establish new support system More rigorous and specific classes Balancing school, socializing, family, and work Moving Out Transitioning to sophomore/junior status Even more rigorous classes

RESHAPING OF THE 4 YEAR PLAN? Complete College Georgia – 15 to Finish15 to Finish Institutional Completion Goals and Strategies Increase the number of undergraduate degrees awarded Provide intrusive advising to keep students on track to graduate Shorten time to degree completion Restructure instructional delivery and resources to support educational excellence and student success Improve access for underserved and/or priority communities How does this affect the traditional 4 year plan? Taking major courses as MOWR Students who want to take less hours after matriculation Graduating early and enrollment management Confused about major with a high number of hours?
