The Respiratory System

What is Respiration?Respiration? Respiration is the process of exchanging (trading) gases, or… BREATHING! We breathe in air that is mostly oxygen, and breathe out air that is mostly carbon dioxideoxygencarbon dioxide Oxygen and carbon dioxide are the gases exchanged during respiration.respiration

What is the Respiration System made of? Nasal cavity (nose) Pharynx (where nasal and oral cavities meet) Larynx (voice box) Trachea (windpipe) Bronchi Bronchioles Alveoli Diaphragm (muscle) Make up the lungs

The Respiration System

WhyWhy do we breathe? We need oxygen! Every cell in our body needs oxygen, we get oxygen by breathing. Why do our cells need oxygen? To make energy and do everything they need to do for us. Without oxygen, our cells don’t work. Without working cells, WE don’t work!

How do we breathe? Inside our chests, our rib muscles and diaphragm (another muscle) work to make our chests bigger for our lungs to fill with air when we inhale (breathe in). diaphragm Then they work again, making our chests smaller, to push the air out of our lungs when we exhale (breathe out).

How do we breath? How do we breath?* InhaleExhale

What happens when we inhale? Oxygen goes from our nose or mouth down the trachea. The trachea splits in half, into two bronchi, to bring oxygen to each lung. The bronchi split into smaller branches inside the lungs. Then the oxygen then reaches the alveoli. Each alveoli gives oxygen to red blood cells in the bloodstream. Oxygen works with the circulatory system to travel through our bodies to reach every cell.

What happens when we exhale? After oxygen reaches a cell, the cell uses the oxygen and makes carbon dioxide. Cells send carbon dioxide back into the bloodstream, because cells can’t use carbon dioxide for anything. The carbon dioxide travels through the circulatory system to make its way in to the alveoli.circulatory system Then the carbon dioxide moves from the alveoli to the bronchioles, and then to the bronchi. It moves through the bronchi up the trachea and out of our mouths and noses.

Sum it all up! There are 6 parts of the respiratory system that you need to know, what are they? What is respiration? Which two gases get exchanged in the alveoli? Why do we breathe? How do we breathe? What other system does the respiratory system work with?
