Monday Warm Up  LT: I will be previewing the unit on the Progressive Era  BW:  What does the term “Progressive” mean to you ?  What kind of leader would be needed to tackle problems such as child labor, poverty, business abuses, and political corruption?

Theodore Roosevelt  Young Theodore Roosevelt led a daring exploits in Cuba during the Spanish American War.  He returned a hero and became governor of New York in  Only two years later in 1900, Roosevelt became vice-president under William McKinley.  McKinley died at the age of 63.  Roosevelt becomes president at the age of 42.

Promoting Social Reform  Social reformers wanted to help the poor, the unemployed, and workers  They provided educational and employment services to immigrants, they also promoted minimum wage laws, limits on working hours and help for the unemployed.  Prohibitionists were reformers who worked to prevent the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol.

Roosevelts Square Deal  The Square Deal was President Theodore Roosevelt 's domestic program formed upon three basic ideas: conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection.

Protecting Consumers  Roosevelt became concerned about the meat packing industry after reading Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle”  Roosevelt launched an investigation of the meat-packing industry  In 1906, he signed the Meat Inspection Act

Conserving Natural Resources  Roosevelt was a strong crusader for conservation  He controlled how America’s natural resources were used  Roosevelt also preserved 194 million acers of public lands including the Grand Canyon.  He also created the U.S. Forest Service

Roosevelt’s Civil Rights Dilemma  He did not push for civil rights for African Americans  During his first term as president, he appointed African Americans to southern political offices and denounced lynching  October 16, 1901 Roosevelt invited Booker T. Washington to stay for dinner after a meeting.  Northerners support it  southerns hate it

Muckraker Biographies Your Task: You will be selecting one of the muckrakers listed below and will be creating a short biography on the person this will be completed in a groups of 2-3 people.  Research the writer’s life and give examples of his or her work.  Summarize the writer’s life story and evaluate his or her success as a muckraker.  Research general information such as full name, birth place etc..  Be prepared to present your findings to the class at the end of the period.
