Leadership for Success Todd Geist

What it means to be a leader? Leadership is not the end, is not the goal, that end is success We have to translate that knowledge into specific behavior and ACT upon NOW ! The presentation – dialog, not a monologue, not just he sharing context Presentation: 1) Foundation of leadership 2) Leadership actions 3) Emotional intelligence

Todd Geist From Pennsylvania originally, lives on Cincinnati, Ohio Finance function in P & G; 29 years in the company Connection with Bulgaria since 2006 – in Vidin “The Bulgarian language will be spoken in heaven” Active in the church in Cincinnati He likes traveling and hiking – a mountain person His favourite beaches are Sozopol and Sinemoretz

P & G Products Ariel, Gillette, Old Spice, Head and Shoulders, Always ( for the ladies ), Oral B, Peppers, … Number 1 on the pharmacy market The biggest in it`s industry In the Top 3 in developing leaders ( 2012 – Number 1 in the world ) They desire to be first. The company hires 99,99 % of its employees from the college campuses right after. They are the best in the world in developing these people into leaders. Dictionary: someone who guides others in direction or action Everyone could be a leader – the principle of P & G – CEO or nightshift

Why do we need leadership? The leadership is necessary for corporate survival How many years is been P & G for existence ? – 182 years It`s America based company Characteristics of effective leaders? – leading oneself before leading others ; they know where they are going ; … Ineffective leaders – incompetence, it`s all about me; lack of communication with the team ; unemotional intelligence ; … Far more important then what you do is – who you are!

Leadership character What is character ? – personality, values, it is : Who you are, when no one is watching !!! 1) Sense of purpose – the reason for being; Motivation; from deep within - internal 2) Courage – the 1 st of personal qualities, the one that guaranties all others 3) Self discipline – who decides what the right thing is – he uses the Bible 4) Respect – excepting differences in others 5) Integrity – someone who is known for deep, honesty and integrity : Who you are when no one is watching! 6) Humility – it`s all about their ego – the ineffective leaders 7) Empathy / Compassion – challenge people to take significant things

The foundation of leadership is TRUST “Never trouble another for what you could do for yourself” “Never spend yur money before you have it” ….. What are the things that are important to you and the role I want them to have in my life ? Write down: 8 most important thibgs to you; 5 most important things ; 3 most important things ; What is your purpose ? Why are you here ? Commit to a peace of paper ( it`s very helpful )

The Leadership Actions What Leaders DO ? – 5 point model ( principles that P&G uses ) 1) The idea of laying out a Vision - visionaire 2) The idea of engaging others – vision of the future – to develop leaderships with other people 3) Adding Capability people to have the skills that they need 4) Driving inspiration – the leadership role of the inspirer – giving energy, motivation ! 5) Executing with excellence / If you practice them, you are guaranteed to be an effective leader /

1) Laying out a Vision - Visionaire Steve Jobs, Da Vinci, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King – charismatic, inspiring, creative – they saw something, they connected the points. Someone who is externally focused! Creative, involving others to take that vision to the next level 2) Engaging others : Mother Theresa A person who build strong relationship, TRUST ! Number 1 motivation in the world is Selfinterest

3) Capability – Martin Luther King, … Role of the leader – doing what you do best. / His job is to build capability in the global world, to develop them as leaders / The people in the team to know their strengths – Annual performance review : If you do A, B, C well, others would tell you focus on X,Y,Z, but P & G : what we can do to do A,B,C even better? We are going to have passion, better results Re-modeling / Are you an above average, compared with other people ? 94% men/

4) Inspiration – John F. Kennedy, Mother Theresa Someone who shows enthusiasm, internal motivation P & G wants people to understand how their work connects to the purpose of the company. Recognition 5) Executing with excellence – general strategies The role of the manager: Accountability ( systems put in the place ), making sure all the people that are following you understand how their role relates to the role of the organization. The idea of personally showing that you can lead by example. Leader is not someone that stays around and supervises, but someone who gets his hands dirty and does things. * Write down 1 or 2 things that you do especially well and that you could still improve the most on

Leadership Emotional Intelligence Why this matters to P & G ? – It`s a way to understand who will be leaders ! Those who have strong emotional intelligence. - IQ is max developed by the age of 25 ( running out of time ) - EQ – we can develop all the time ( P&G emphasises on EQ ) Intelligence = … + … + … ( musical, interpersonal, ….. ) IQ – people know it, but EQ matters more, because 85% of successful leaders are successful because of EQ and 15% because of IQ !!! “IQ gets you to the door, but EQ gets you hired” 5 Indicators of high potential – a person who practices these 5 actions is an effective human being ( the 5 actions )

4 Elements: 1) Self awareness – the idea of recognizing ones moves, emotions and drives. ( optimistic, balanced people, who know themselves ) What is your Hot bottom ? What is the response that other people give in that emotional react? Self confident – someone who is willing to talk about what he does; people who are not just receiving feedback, but go and ask for it! 2) Self management – people who are really focused on getting things done – internally motivated; responding to emotional situations; We are emotional ( the people being ) The ability to make choices Ex. With Nelson Mandela – 27 years in jail for unfair reason

4 Elements: 3) Social awareness – The idea is to understand the emotions that we see around and to respond in a positive way ( somebody was really good in listening with his eyes ) Creating relationships ( he isn`t trying to do everybody like you or everybody happy ) 4) Social management – managing relationships, networking, people who are really good with social skills In every organization CHANGE is very important word! Write down what you do pretty well and what needs improvement

Leadership for Success EQ can be improved, but it`s really hard! IQ is the big part of the brain, EQ is very deep inside. It needs Practice Put together a Personal Development Plan for Yourself Use Mentors to grow, to learn ! DISC Profile !!! ( like the Colbe test ) “Nothing great ever was achieved without enthusiasm”

Thank you !!!
