Project SEARCH North Lanarkshire

© CCHMC 1/3/06 A one year training course run for people with a learning disability who are working towards finding a job Project Search began at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio, USA Lasts one academic year – September to June On-site classroom with support from a job coach and a lecturer Students work 2/3 placements within that year Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 15.30pm (no evenings or weekends) Each placement lasts 10 – 12 weeks In 2009, the Health and Care Partnership authorised the implementation of a Project Search Site in Lanarkshire What is Project Search ?

1st Lanarkshire Site – Wishaw General Partners - NHS Lanarkshire - NLC Supported Employment - NLC Regeneration Service - Motherwell College - SERCO Started September 2010 First Project Search site in Scotland DVD

Wishaw General Outcome Achieved 100% employment outcome in year 1 Only one of 15 sites in the UK to achieve 100% One of the 25 out of the 220 sites to achieve 100% world wide

Benefits to the Host Employer A UK evaluation: Benefiting from an enthusiastic, motivated and fully trained member of staff Project Search has saved the host employer money in both recruitment and overtime payments Host employers have won prestigious awards Business reputations have been enhanced as a disability friendly company That the host employer has developed its corporate responsibility by giving a person with a disability an opportunity to have a rewarding job in their own community and be more independent

Current Position A new Lanarkshire Steering Group has been formed by the following partners: - NHS Lanarkshire - North Lanarkshire Council Supported Employment -South Lanarkshire Council Supported Employment - Motherwell College - SERCO -ISS

Current Lanarkshire Sites Wishaw General (commenced 2010) Monklands Hospital (commenced 2012) Hairmyres (Commenced 2012)

Progress since 2010 in North Lanarkshire 2010/ % of the 8 graduates remain in work 2011/ % found employment and job finding continues for the 2 remaining graduates 2012/ students are participating across the 2 North Lanarkshire sites. One student has secured an admin apprenticeship with NHS Lanarkshire in Monklands Hospital

Social Return on Investment (SROI) A further evaluation is currently being carried out by the Social Value Lab covering the last 3 years To date 48 independent interviews have been conducted including students, graduates, carers and line managers 100% of people requested for interview attended

Findings so far: Students Increased happiness (52%) Increased structure in life (33%) Purpose in life (43%) Improved social skills (24%) More friends (95%) Increased confidence (95%) Improved physical health (62%) Increased independence (95%) Increased skills (71%)

Findings so far Parents More time to yourself (85%) Peace of mind because child better prepared for the future (85%) Changed attitude in son / daughter (100%) Happier child (85%) Improved family relationships (23%) Son/daughter can handle change better (69%) Negatives Worries the job will come to an end (23%) Benefits will make it not worthwhile working (23%)
