Tips on Public Speaking

What you say How you say it

How to Prepare Your Speech 1.Select a topic. This requires research and reading to best select a topic that interests you or is worth being presented. 2.Research your topic. You want to know as much about your topic as possible, from multiple perspectives. You need at least 3 sources but in order to find those 3 you will need to look at many more and select the best 3 sources. 3.Create an outline for your notes and information. The more detailed your outline is, the better. You should revisit your outline to revise, edit, and finalize it as often as possible. This will help you to memorize the information and format as well.

How to Prepare Your Speech 4. Practice delivering your speech. There are four important elements of giving a good speech that you will need to keep in mind: – Volume – Use of Time – Word Choice/Language – Nonverbal Communications

Informative Outline Format Your Topic Your Purpose/Goal: To educate the audience about your topic and persuade them to agree with your point of view or take some action. Introduction: Start your speech with an attention-getter. Also, tell the audience what you will be talking about and why. This is similar to the introduction of an essay (hook, summary of topic/background and your thesis). Main Points: Have at least 3 main points to share about your topic. Be sure to include background information necessary to understand your arguments. Transition from one point to the next. (Again, think of a speech as being like an essay.) Consider discussing and refuting counter- arguments as part of your strategy. Visual Aid: Include this to emphasize your point(s). Charts, graphs, pictures, etc. Conclusion: Signal the end of your speech or briefly review your topic. Restate your thesis. Let the audience know that you are done and thank them.

Important Elements of Delivery Volume How loud or soft should the speaker speak? Should be loud enough to be heard. Increase or decrease volume for emphasis.

Important Elements of Delivery Use of Time How quickly or slowly should the presenter speak? Include pauses. The audience needs to keep up. Slow down or speed up for emphasis.

Important Elements of Delivery Word Choice/Language How clearly do they speak and what words do they choose to make an effect? Speak clearly. Appeal to your audience. Use vocabulary when appropriate.

Important Elements of Delivery Non-verbal Communication Eye contact, gestures, posture, and movement. Make as much eye contact as possible. Some movement is good if it is natural. Use appropriate body language. Consider your clothing.

Practice, Practice, Practice! Film yourself if possible so that you can watch and be aware of your natural tendencies. Expect to be nervous, it happens and is best to be prepared. Fake it ‘til you make it! Tell yourself you can do it. The more you practice, the more prepared and confident you will feel and it will come across to your audience.
