Additional Suggestions: Getting the Most out the SfN Meeting and Beyond

Time & attention are limited!  ~ 17,000 conference presentations; you may have to miss one  Plan – it’s not too late!  Use the meeting planner to search, schedule and triage –Critical –Helpful –Interesting –Whatever

Time & attention are limited!  Shepherd energy as well as time  Understand the types of presentations –“Big” talks –Symposia –Minisymposia –Nanosymposia –Posters  Don’t give posters short shrift  Exhibits valuable even if no money

Networking  Have three descriptions of your research –30 sec –1 min –3-5 min  Note your interactions on business cards  Consider socials to meet “players”  If shy about introducing yourself to senior scientists, seek out students/postdocs and ask for an introduction

Networking  Expect most interactions to be brief  Goal is to facilitate later, more extensive conversation (real or virtual)  Follow up! Be persistent, if necessary

Be a steward of the discipline  Take advantage of chance to learn about: –The role of Neuroscience in society –Opportunities and approaches for public education and advocacy –The history of your field  Be an active member of the neuroscience community
