UW-Madison’s prior Diversity Plan ended in 2008 Previous plan focused on recruitment & retention, specifically for reasons related to race/ethnicity/gender. Definition of diversity has been expanded, re-considered, in the context of social, economic, political and historical perspectives (to name a few).

Framework for Diversity based on…

From UW System: Inclusive Excellence: Diversity is defined as Individual differences and group/social differences that can be engaged in the service of learning. Grounded in organizational development theory, Inclusive Excellence emphasizes shared leadership, responsibility, and accountability in the pursuit of equity, diversity and excellence. Inclusive Excellence helps universities fully utilize diversity as a resource and central component of academic quality and excellence for all students

Campus Strategic Framework, 2009–2014 Our Vision: The University of Wisconsin–Madison will be a model public university in the 21st century, serving as a resource to the public and working to enhance the quality of life in the state, the nation, and the world. The university will remain a preeminent center for discovery, learning, and engagement by opening new forms of access to citizens from every background; creating a welcoming, empowered, and inclusive community; and preparing current and future generations to live satisfying, useful, and ethical lives. “In partnership with the people of the State of WI”, and with colleagues around the world, the university’s faculty, staff, and students will identify and address many of the state’s and the world’s most urgent and complex problems.
