10 A Call for Unity Council Chairs Accomplishment
Our History A Call for Unity Council Chairs Accomplishment CDI was established by then Chancellor Loren Crabtree after recognizing a need to bring all campus commissions together. CDI wished to include representatives from all campus commissions. The first chairs of CDI were Marva Rudolph and Alan Chesney. In , it was decided that a “rotating chair” schedule would be put into place. This means each academic year, the council would have a Chair and Chair - elect. Every year, the Chair – elect takes the place of the Chair, and a new Chair – elect is elected. CDI was instrumental in advocating for the creation of the position of Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Inclusion.

11 Formation of CDI Action Plan Purpose of Action Plan
Our History Formation of CDI Action Plan Purpose of Action Plan The first meeting of the Diversity Council (CDI’s first name) was held on October 11, 2004, with the late Dr. Marva Rudolph and Alan Chesney (retired) serving as co-chairs. The Council was called together and given its charge by then Chancellor Loren Crabtree. By January of 2005 we drafted a report entitled A Framework for Action and shortly thereafter changed the name to Council on Diversity and Interculturalism, in keeping with our Quality Enhancement Plan launched in 2005, “Ready for the World,” which emphasized intercultural as well as international engagement. This report represented efforts of the Knoxville Campus and its area units to create a campus- wide diversity plan. Information gathered and presented reflected a very thoughtful process of engaging administrators, faculty, staff, and students from academic and non-academic units in dialogue and discussions regarding diversity-relates issues.

12 Summary of Goals of Action Plan
Our History Summary of Goals of Action Plan Create and sustain welcoming, supportive, and inclusive campus climate Attract and retain greater numbers of individuals from under-represented populations into faculty, staff, and administrative positions (particularly department heads, directors, deans, and vice chancellors). Attract, retain, and graduate increasing numbers of diverse students including those from historically under-represented populations and international students. Develop and strengthen partnerships with diverse communities in Tennessee and globally. Ensure that undergraduate curricular requirements include significant intercultural perspectives. Prepare graduate students to become teacher, researchers, and professionals in a diverse world.

13 Our Future In an uncertain time, ensure things do not fall through the cracks. 2. Sponsor and/or co-sponsor events throughout the academic year that advance Diversity in its many forms on our campus and in our community.

14 We are glad you are here and look forward to what you will contribute to diversity and inclusion efforts at UT!
