3 What is a Community School?

4 Definition A welcoming and inclusive place that builds on the assets of the community to help serve the identified needs of the students and community through coordinated, strategic partnerships.

5 What is a Community School? Description A network of providers and partners who are organized and coordinated to identify and build on the assets of the community to meet the needs as expressed by the local community. A place where there are opportunities for everyone in the community to engage, collaborate, innovate and support student learning. A place where academics, health and social services, youth and community development are integrated through networking and lifelong learning. A thriving place where every student is prepared for college, career and community.

6 Why Community Schools? Tulsa Cincinnati Results ● Graduation rates rose from 56% to over 80% from 2000 to 2010 ● Within 10 years, 2003 to 2013, the achievement gap was reduced from 14.5% to 4%

7 Community School Structures ●Resource Coordinator –Staffs Community School Committee. –Collaborates with families, students, community and partners to provide needed services and programs. Community School Committee –Is made up of families, students, Principal/Staff, Community members, Community Partners. –Makes decisions about: Programming and services provides in and through the school. Engaging families and community. Lead Partner ●Provides support and resources to ensure needed programs and services can be coordinated through the school. ●Collaborates with other partners to offer services and programs. ●Has the trust of the community.

8 School Selection Needs assessment will be based on data including: Demographics School Performance, including achievement gap data. Physical/Mental Health Indicators. City of Madison Neighborhood Indicators and MOST indicators. Race to Equity Report Neighborhood Indicators. Existing Resources Lack of Services/Programs in and around the school and community. Quality and effectiveness of existing resources in and around the school and community.

9 School Selection The Capacity assessment will be based on a School’s application which will identify the desire of the school community to implement the community school model and will include:. The commitment of the school staff and administration to a shared leadership model. A history of successful and effective family and community engagement. A history of collaboration with community members and organizations. The physical capacity of the school to provide space to a Resource Coordinator and identified programs/services. Alignment of school policies, partnerships and relationships to the Strategic Framework. Schools that meet criteria that indicate high need will be invited to apply and asked to provide additional information regarding the school’s capacity and readiness to become a Community School. The application process will be designed to encourage interested schools to begin engaging in the work necessary to support the community school model from a very early stage.
