3 WHAT IS A CULTURE OF EVIDENCE? “Culture of Evidence refers to a commitment among student affairs professionals to use data to show how the programs they offer, the processes they implement, and the services they provide are effective and contribute significantly to an institutions’ ability to reach its stated goals and fulfill its mission”* Culture of Evidence demonstrates that programs, practices, or services are: Are effective Supports the University’s and Student Affairs’ mission and strategic plan Contribute to student development, student success, student learning and/or student completion rates *Source: Building a Culture of Evidence in Student Affairs: A Guide for Leaders and Practitioners

6 Higher Learning Commission Re-Affirmation Higher Learning Commission – Regional Institutional Accreditation Organization WVU Campus Visit –Spring 2014 Five new criteria:  Criterion Three: The institution provides high quality education, wherever and however its offerings are delivered.  Criterion Four: The institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environment, and support services, and it evaluates their effectiveness for student learning through processes designed to promote continuous improvement.

9 The Student Affairs Division supports West Virginia University’s 2020 Strategic Plan by providing a student- centered learning environment that fosters diversity, enhances student success and development, encourages global engagement, and creates a foundation for achieving the health and well-being of our campus and community. GOAL 1 Serve as an advocate for students and promote a student-centered philosophy. GOAL 2 Develop and enhance student success and retention programs to support the goals of West Virginia University. GOAL 3 Foster diversity and an inclusive culture within the Division of Student Affairs and the WVU student body. GOAL 4 Expand the international and global activity of Student Affairs. 11 MISSION AND ACTION PLAN Mission Statement-Every Student Affairs should have a mission statement that supports the University mission and is compatible with the strategic plan Goal Setting Action Plan Clear statement of the goal List of tasks required to reach the goal Identifying who is responsible for each task Timeline for each task Criteria to determine goal achievement

12 Unit Mission (supports University mission) Three to five goals Each goal should have objectives outlining the tasks required to reach the goal. Action Items should include who is responsible for each task and the timeline for completing each task Determine how the goal is achieved. TEMPLATE
