FRENCH IMMERSION AT ÉCOLE INTERMÉDIAIRE ST. PETERS LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES TO FOSTER AT HOME & HOW TO ENCOURAGE POSITIVE ATTITUDES IN SCHOOL

 Your help, is essential!! While it may look different this year in comparison to how you have helped your child previously, there is still so much you can do to provide motivation to learn and succeed. Your support is critical to help your child develop a good foundation for academic learning thereby ensuring success in the French Immersion program. THE TRANSITION TO GRADE 7 FRENCH IMMERSION

 Be positive about the French Immersion program.  Show interest in daily school activities.  Check homework pages for assigned work.  Communicate your questions, concerns or suggestions with the teacher.  Access French books, games, apps, videos, television and radio. HOW TO FEEL CONNECTED

Homework has THREE main purposes:  To finish work modeled but not completed in school.  To provide practice and extension of ideas presented in class.  To allow for student preparation in upcoming class lessons. LES DEVOIRS: HOMEWORK

 Continue to schedule dedicated time for homework, and provide a quiet place to work.  Ask your child questions regarding teacher’s instructions, including: What to do When is it due Where to get the information How to complete the work Your questioning will encourage attention to detail in class.  Encourage your child to review notes and relevant sections of information.  Encourage your child to review for common errors and correct mistakes. HOW TO HELP WITH HOMEWORK

 E ncourage reading and validate the importance of reading and writing.  Ask your child to read key terms and responses to you in French. Often they may be hesitant to “Just say something in French.” Try to encourage them to say one sentence in French each day  Expose yourselves to shared experiences in French. Watch a television show or favorite film in French, listen to the radio or music in French, borrow or purchase French books. HOW TO ENCOURAGE LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AT HOME

 Encourage your child to ask questions.  Stress the importance of working at all four skill sets: Oral production Oral comprehension Written production Written comprehension  Encourage use of language reference materials as a skill to develop. (students should have a bescherelle and dictionary at home)  Reiterate importance of active listening and participation in class. HOW TO ENCOURAGE LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT AT SCHOOL
