1 Welcome to Back to School Night! Advanced Plus Reading 2014-2015 Mrs. Namisniak

2 Study Skills and Time Management The students will integrate study skills and time management into their daily work by: Using the daily planner on their iPad to record homework. Using the calendar to record test dates. Using the calendar to plan study sessions. Using Connect Ed To-Do List to learn time management skills.

3 Basic Classroom Expectations Stay focused. Read all directions carefully. Answer questions as directed and in sentences. Copy words carefully. Avoid spelling errors. Always use correct punctuation and capitalization. Complete assigned work on time. Be proud to produce high quality work.

4 READING WONDERS LANGUAGE ARTS PROGRAM Developing writers who read and readers who write. Built on the Common Core Standards (CCSS) Advanced Plus = Beyond Level Components: Reading/Writing Workshop Literature Anthology Digital Elements to reinforce learning (You will receive information regarding online access from your child’s homeroom teacher.)

5 Junior Great Books The Five Guidelines for Shared Inquiry Discussion Read the story carefully before participating in the discussion. Discuss only the story everyone has read. Support ideas with evidence from the story. Listen to other participants and respond to them directly. Expect the leader to only ask questions. Written Work Questions are interpretive. Give thoughtful answers. Explain answer choices. Neatness does count. Work not finished in class becomes homework, due the following day.

6 AR Expectations Read every night for 20 -30 minutes. At a minimum, read the targeted number of AR points per trimester. Log in to Home Connect to check progress. Check total points, average score, and word total. Become a Word Millionaire ☺ Become a “Model” or “Master” Reader.

7 Achieve the following for any 12 week period: Reading Time: Class average is a minimum of 20 minutes daily. Comprehension: 90% of students average at or above 85% on AR Quizzes. Criteria for Model Classroom Certification

8 Achieve the following for any 18 week period: Reading Time: Class average is a minimum of 25 minutes daily. Comprehension: 90% of students average at or above 90% on AR Quizzes. Criteria for Master Classroom Certification
